NORTHLAND CROSSING MULTI-SPORT CHALLENGE - 05 APRIL 2014
The Craigs Northern Crossing is a New Zealand coast-to-coast multisport event that follows ancestral pathways from Kupe’s first landing place almost 800 years ago at the mouth of the Hokianga Harbour, across the top of the North Island to Kerikeri, site of this country’s first permanent trading post built by English missionaries almost 200 years ago.
Competitors start with an 8 kilometre run, followed by an 80 kilometre bike ride and another 8 kilometre run. An optional 12 kilometre kayak leg turns the Northern Crossing from a duathlon into a multisport event.
The event includes an abbreviated course for people looking for a middle-distance challenge. Called the Missionary Trail, the 51 kilometre bike and run duathlon starts with a 13 kilometre mountain bike leg along the Pou Herenga Tai cycleway before moving to the road for a further 30 kilometre cycle ride, followed by an 8 kilometre run down to Kerikeri’s historic Stone Store Basin.
Like the longer coast-to-coast course the Missionary Trail offers a kayaking leg.
Both the Northern Crossing and Missionary Trail multisport and duathlon routes feature individuals and team races.
The event is the fund-raising brainchild of the Rotary Club of Kerikeri, and supported by Craigs Investment Partners and other sponsors. Proceeds help support community youth projects right across Northland.
